Prior to joining UBC in 2005, Don Black was Executive Director of the Laurier Institution, a national, non-profit founded to advance and disseminate knowledge about the social and economic implications of Canada's cultural diversity.

From 1990 to 2003, Don held increasingly senior positions related to research, policy, and planning, including Executive Director, Marketing and Communications, at the Open Learning Agency (OLA), a government agency that pioneered open and distance learning at all levels of education in British Columbia.

From 2006 to 2010, Don was seconded half-time to the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) as Director, Education Programs. He led the development of the official education program for the 2010 Winter Games, including /EDU, an online, interactive, and bilingual Olympic and Paralympic education portal serving teachers and students at all levels of education around the world.

In 2011, Don co-founded the online UBC Centre for Cultural Planning and Development as a legacy of the 2010 Games.

Since 2005, Don has led the development of non-credit, personal education programs that help connect UBC excellence with a wide range of learners, from high school students to seniors.

Don has a BA in English from Simon Fraser University and an MA in Canadian Studies (with distinction) from Carleton University. He has also completed PhD coursework and comprehensive exams (with distinction) in sociology at Carleton University.

Christina de Castell was Director, Collection & Technology prior to becoming Chief Librarian at Vancouver Public Library, operated by the City of Vancouver. In that role she was responsible for oversight of service and strategy for Collections & Technical Services (Acquisitions, Cataloguing and Processing), Digital Services and IT at Vancouver Public Library.

Former manager of policy and advocacy at IFLA in The Hague. Member of the Canadian Urban Libraries Council Task Force on eContent, working towards eBook solutions that work for libraries, publishers, authors and readers; the International Federation of Library Associations & Institutions eLending Working Group; the leadership group of ReadersFirst, and the Copyright Committee of the Canadian Federation of Library Associations.

More About Christina de Castell
Christina joined Vancouver Public Library in 2006 as manager of InfoAction, the Library's fee-based research service. She became Manager, Online Information & News in 2010, responsible for managing the Library's online services, including the website, electronic resources and related training, email and telephone information services and in-person services at the Central Library. Prior to joining VPL, Christina worked at the BC Securities Commission as a website manager, usability specialist and research librarian.

Christina is a member of the Canadian Urban Libraries Council Task Force on eContent. She was Treasurer of the BC Library Association in 2009-10 and received the President's Award for service to the association in 2011. Christina is a Fellow of the Special Libraries Association and a past-president of its Western Canada Chapter.

Christina received a Master of Library and Information Studies from the University of BC in 2001.

Stephen joined Vancouver Public Library in 2012, and has extensive expertise and experience leading marketing and communications in large, diverse organizations; he has worked with agencies, non-profits and public-sector organizations.

A journalist by training, his earliest communications work was in community and national media as a reporter, editor and photographer, and he was a Vancouver-based Western Canada correspondent for several U.S. and international news organizations.

He moved into marketing roles at the B.C. Institute of Technology and then Vancouver Community College, where for nearly 10 years he led the college's marketing and communications department, which during his tenure won several national excellence awards for its work. He has been a faculty member in part-time studies at BCIT, and is an e-communications contributor supporting one of B.C.'s largest non-profit development agencies.

Dawn joined Vancouver Public Library in 1993 as a children's librarian and has held various positions including multicultural coordinator, branch head and area manager. She joined the management team in 2007. In 2012 she was the project manager for the Information Services Review. She successfully transformed the Central Library's information services from a multi-department subject based model to a fully integrated, centralized service.

Dawn is an adjunct faculty member at the iSchool at UBC, teaching human resource management, and is an active member of the school's Alumni Executive. Dawn currently sits on Langara College's Library & Information Technology Program Advisory Committee and is a former member of the iSchool Admissions Committee. Dawn is a member of the Canadian and BC Library Associations and the Public Library Association, a division of the American Library Association.

Dawn received a Master of Library Science from the University of BC in 1993.

Janet joined Vancouver Public Library in 1980 as a library assistant, became a systems support technician in 1981 and supervisor of the systems group in 1985. Janet returned to University and earned a Master of Information Science in 1995 and became the library's systems librarian upon graduation. She was appointed Manager, Systems & IT in 2009.

Janet received a Master of Information Science from the University of Western Ontario in 1995.

Sandra joined Vancouver Public Library as its Chief Librarian in December 2010. She joined VPL after serving as the Director of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at the University of British Columbia. Prior to that, she worked at the Vancouver Public Library, first as the Director of Branches East/South and Outreach Services, followed by Director of Systems and Special Projects.

While at VPL as a Senior Director, Sandra served as the National Director of the HRSDC-funded national demonstration project Working Together, which sought to evolve new ways of working with socially excluded community members, led the VPL website redesign process, and initiated and ran the province-wide Beyond Words program.

Prior to VPL, Sandra served as Port Moody Public Library's Manager of Library Services, as a Cybrarian at Vancouver's online learning community Suite101.com, as a reference librarian and cataloguer in Abilene (TX), and as a cataloguer at Calgary Public Library.

In the past, Sandra served on the BCLA Board, was co-editor of the PNLA Quarterly, was a founding Board member of the Centre for Equitable Library Access and served on the Board of Triage Emergency Services and Care Society. Sandra is currently the President of the Canadian Library Association.

Library leader with over twenty years' experience in public libraries in the UK and Canada. Areas of expertise include digital library services, building and leading strong teams, strategic planning and evaluation, leading change, fostering innovation, evaluating and using emerging technologies, project management, digital collection development, licensing, and privacy.

Kay joined Vancouver Public Library in 2005 as an auxiliary librarian following a ten year career in public libraries in the UK. She was part of the project management team for the 2008 VPL website redesign, managed the library's online reference service, and was subsequently the Coordinator for British Columbia's provincial virtual reference service. More recently she was responsible for leading VPL's first community digital initiatives projects and overseeing digital collection development.

Kay is a member of BCLA and serves on the Editorial Board of The Reference Librarian. She is the author of numerous articles on the role of technology in libraries and its impact on library services, and has taught continuing education courses on topics including web design, user experience, and project management.

Kay graduated from the Information & Library Studies program at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth in 2004.

Katherine joined the Accounting office of Vancouver Public Library in December 2001. She obtained her professional accountant designation in 1989 with Deloitte Haskins & Sells (now Deloitte). She was appointed Manager, Accounting & Finance in 2013.

She graduated from the University of Lancaster, UK, with a BA in Accounting and Finance.

Diana joined Vancouver Public Library in February 2007. She leads a team of five managers and oversees service delivery in 21 Library branch locations as well as children's and youth services. Diana has twenty-five years experience in libraries throughout British Columbia and Manitoba.

Before joining VPL, Diana was Chief Librarian at Port Moody Public Library and led the library through significant growth including: implementation of year-round Sunday openings, fund development planning and creating a building expansion committee.
Prior to her time at Port Moody, Diana was Director, Systems and Technical Services at Fraser Valley Regional Library.

Diana has been involved with the BC Library Association Executive, serving as President and Treasurer. Diana has a Masters of Library Science and completed a Certificate in Leadership in the Public Sector from Royal Roads University in 2008.

Amanda joined Vancouver Public Library in 2015. As director of Planning & Projects, she is accountable for leading the development of the strategic plan for VPL, overseeing board and administrative policy, and for major projects such as VPL's branch location strategy.

Prior to VPL, Amanda served for five years as director of Sustainability at the City of Vancouver. There, she oversaw the development and implementation of the Greenest City Action Plan, Renewable City Plan, and Climate Adaptation Plan. Her work won multiple awards including the C40 Cities Award at the 2015 UN COP21 Conference in Paris.

Previously, as a manager at Vancity, she led the organization's successful effort to be the first carbon neutral financial institution in North America. As a manager at Accenture, she managed major projects for North American government, energy, telecom and financial services organizations.

An avid athlete, Amanda cycled across North America, completed a dozen marathons and the 2010 Ironman. Amanda is a committee member with the National Academy of Science Policy and Global Affairs Unit, an alumnus of Harvard University's Global Change Agent program, and holds an M.B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley.
