June 15, 2009 - Duncan, British Columbia. The Board of Directors of Western Forest Products Inc. named Stephen Frasher as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Company, effective immediately. Dominic Gammiero, who has served in this position for the last six months while a recruitment process was underway, will continue in his role as Chairman of the Board.
Mr. Frasher has spent most of his career in the transportation industry, most recently as President and Chief Executive Officer of Washington Marine Group ('WMG') in Vancouver. His experience at WMG has provided him with an understanding of the political, labour and First Nations environment in B.C.
"Mr. Frasher has a proven track record with companies facing challenging situations and he will complement the recent re-organization of the company," said Mr. Gammiero.
A New Yorker by birth and aeronautical engineer by trade, Frasher has never worked in the forest industry, but he has extensive experience in turning around insolvent companies, an attribute Brookfield wanted in a new president. Frasher came to Western from the Washington Marine Group. He has spent most of his career in the rail and barge industries.
Since taking over Western last June as president and CEO, Frasher has brought changes to the company and coined the term "new normal" to describe the smaller company that is emerging - a company where margins matter more than volume.
It marks a drastic departure for the company that was created in 2005 by stitching together the coastal Crown timberlands of the old MacMillan Bloedel empire, Doman Industries Ltd. and Canfor Corp. But times have changed - the days of the old lumber barons who controlled the land they logged are over. First nations have won much of that control through court victories, and markets have shrunk for the coast's main species, hemlock.
Western has been unprofitable since its birth and consolidation just doesn't make sense any more, Frasher said.
